Anouk Aimée, the French film actress who became an international sex symbol, has died. The news of her death at the age of 92 was first reported by Europe 1 radio.
Aimée starred in over 70 films during her career, which spanned seven decades. She is best known for her roles in Lola Montes (1955), La Dolce Vita (1960), and 8½ (1963). In these films, she played women who were both alluring and enigmatic, often caught between the desire for love and the need for independence.
Aimée's beauty and talent made her a favorite of directors such as Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, and Jacques Demy. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Lola Montes and won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress for her role in 8½.
In a statement released after her death, Aimée's family said they were "profoundly saddened" by her passing. "She was a great actress and a wonderful person," the statement said. "We will miss her terribly."
