Wimbledon, July 26, 2023 - Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini has secured a place in the second round of Wimbledon, following a hard-fought victory over British qualifier Jack Draper in a five-set thriller.
Berrettini, the eighth seed, started the match strongly, taking the first two sets with ease. However, Draper fought back to win the third and fourth sets, forcing the match into a deciding set.
In the fifth set, Berrettini broke Draper's serve in the eighth game and held on to his own serve to seal the victory. The match lasted four hours and 33 minutes, with Berrettini hitting 48 winners and 27 unforced errors.
Berrettini's victory marks his first win at Wimbledon since 2021, when he reached the final. He will face Australian Jordan Thompson in the second round on Thursday.
